HYGGE CURTAINS

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish principle of interior decorating, where the goal is to create a cosy and inviting space. Its literal translation is “a form of everyday togetherness”. There’re many elements in creating a hygge home, and window treatments play a huge part!

Unlike other Scandinavian design styles, hygge is not minimalist. It promotes a feeling of familiarity and an almost ‘cocooning’ effect, making the home a sanctuary; a respite from the outside world.

Curtains are ideal in creating a hygge environment. They assist with heat control and better the acoustics in the home. Of course, blockout treatments are best as they have the desired ‘cocooning’ quality. Choose fabrics with gentle patterns or subtle textures to elevate the look.

Avoid an all-white décor… hygge is about warmth and cosiness, and white is too stark without other colours to break it up. Teals, tans, dark reds, forest green and other slightly earthy colours are perfect to achieve the look.

Don’t be shy with decorative accessories such as candles (choose a scent that makes you feel all snuggly). Indoor plants, textured rugs and patterned cushions are all great elements to keep things cosy.
